One of the families that I assist which called my attention was at the family of Maico because the story of his life is very sad and moving.
The father informed me that the mother is addicted to drugs and alcohol.
When his mother was in the seventh month of pregnancy she fell and the child was born with one part of the head still soft.
At birth, the little Maico weighed less than 2 ½ kilograms and never had good health. The father also suffers from intestinal infection and is not able to eat all foods.
The mother, being addicted, abandoned Maico with 1 year of age and began to steal in order to smoke drugs. She was taken prisoner and is now in the jail-serving sentence for robbery.
The father has Hansen's disease and still takes care of Maico with much love. When Maico become ill, the father takes him to the hospital or to the Health Post.
At the present time little Maico is in a situation a little precarious because he has malaria and is very weak. In spite of this Maico is a cheerful and happy person. His father, Francisco do not lose hope that one day he will see Maico walking and strolling with his brothers and will be recognized by society.
